Useful Tips
Safety - by Margie from Corfu
On Holiday in Edinburgh with my husband and 3 children, we learned from one of the UNMARKED police cars positioned on one of the roads, that it is compulsory to wear seat belts, both front and rear. Small children and babies must be restrained in an appropriate child seat or carrier. We managed to get child seats through our car hire company, but it is better to order when you book your car.
Traffic - by Reinald from Paris, FRANCE
Ive been living in Edinburgh now for 5 years and i must say that i feel very safe on the roads here. Where i come from in Paris, there is one rule and that is never look in the mirrors. In edinburgh, drivers show consideration and respect towards other road users. The city is one of the nicest that i have visited in Europe and the roads are very flat and smooth here too.

Edinburgh Overview
The capital of Scotland is certainly a showcase city for any visitor. First impressions always stick and this is no more apparent than in Edinburgh, as you stroll down Edinburgh's main shopping parade, Prince's Street Garden which has Edinburgh's magnificent castle looms across the city on the opposite rocky crag.

Edinburgh manages to competently straddle the history and culture which has made it the great city with the cosmopolitan bustle which engulfs the city today. and which makes it such a fun place to visit and explore today. Not to be missed is the world class Edinburgh International Festival and the Fringe Festival held every August.

Edinburgh Essentials
Edinburgh Castle - Dominating the city centre on top on an extinct volcano, it is hard to miss Edinburgh Castle. Within it's walls visitors will find Mills Mount Battery, where a gun salute takes place on weekdays, St Margaret's Chapel (the oldest building in Edinburgh), the palace and the Scottish United Services Museum.

Grassmarket - The epicentre of Edinburgh's nightlife overrun with bars and restaurants, originally this site was a market date back to the 1400's. Today the Grassmarket is a great place to go out on an evening or browse the numerous gift shops through the day.

Royal Mile - An excellent way to take in some of Edinburgh's finest architecture is to walk the length of the Royal Mile. Running from Edinburgh Castle to Holyrood Palace, notable stops on route include the Scottish Whisky Heritage Centre, High Tolbooth Kirk (an impressive church with Edinburgh's highest spire) and the Assembly Rooms of the Church of Scotland which are the temporary home of the new Scottish Parliament.

Holyrood Park - For those without time to venture out into the Scottish highlands, Holyrood Park is the perfect microcosm of real Scottish wilderness. A former hunting ground of Scottish monarchs, Holyrood Park is surprisingly varied including hills, moorland, lochs and fields.

Royal Museum of Scotland - A great place to take kids, the Royal Museum of Scotland has a large eclectic collection covering everything from the world's oldest steam locomotive dating from 1813 to wonders from the natural world. There are also decorative arts from Ancient Egypt, Islam, China and Korea. Adjacent, you can also visit the Museum of Scotland which houses archaeological artefacts and has a display listing the history of Scotland from its origins.

Edinburgh Calendar - Pick of the Year's Events
